Our History

Our History

The storied landscape of Washington’s Olympic Mountains contains the myths and legends of diverse cultures and past ages. When you wander around the bend of Hood Canal into Union, the mountains rise up across the water trying to out compete the stars to be the best storytellers. Union’s annual Traveler Days festival, from Earth Day to Mother’s Day honors such old mountain lore. The area is rich in beauty and history, for those who like to take the time to adventure off the beaten path.

Union has a long and celebrated history as an artists’ colony, with many residents drawing inspiration from its beautiful setting on the South Shore of Hood Canal, one of two natural fjords in the continental United States. Recently Forbes Traveler Magazine named Union one of the “20 prettiest towns in America".

The neighboring wilderness, designated Olympic National Park in 1938 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, is now also an International Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site. The mountains in the southeast corner of the park—Mt. Washington, Mt. Constance, and the Brothers—rise across Hood Canal forming a breathtaking vista from any point in Union.

Current attractions include working farms and roadside markets, the four star Alderbrook Resort & Spa, the world-class Alderbrook Golf course, Hood Canal Marina and public boat launch, and of course, the deep saltwater fjord of Hood Canal. Union continues to support a wide variety of arts activities, as well as fishing, hunting, shell fishing, hiking, kayaking, birding and boating.

Today, visitors come for summers of sunshine and shellfish, and the annual return of the salmon. As well as to gather pumpkins in the fall, play in the hay mazes of Hunter Farms, and shop local year round in the large plant nursery and general store (open every day 9am-530pm). Every season has something special to offer, like the introspection of winter among the evergreen landscape, and locating the perfect Christmas tree, or enjoying the 10-miles of beautiufl lights that deck out Alderbrook Resort while waiting for Santa Claus to arrive by boat amidst spectacular fireworks displays.

Every week, year round, enjoy live music in Union. The Alderbrook Resort, Robin Hood Pub, and Union Square Deli feature weekly live music on stage. Every day enjoy excellent cuisine, from the locally grown and sourced entries at Robin Hood Restaurant and Alderbrook Resort to waterfront dining at the family Mexican restaurant 2 Margaritas. Local chefs pull from the regions rich history offering a true fresh taste of the Pacific Northwest. There is always something to rediscover in Union.
